This past week I saw one thing I rarely see and one thing I had never seen before. The rarely
seen was Mrs. Baldwin in total tears. I have seen her weep when her grandmothers have gone home to heaven. They were sincere tears, but of the gentle quietly running down the cheeks variety. This past week I saw her absolutely drenched in tears because she had to look at what neither of us had ever seen before. When she arrived at school she went to check the kiln, anxious to see how her 6th grade students’ projects had turned out. She had been particularly pleased with them and had been very encouraged by the students’ efforts and the results of their good efforts. Nothing could have prepared her for what she was about to see.
The kiln malfunctioned. The pottery was all mined. It was literally stuck to the shelves and sides of the kiln. The kiln was also ruined. The reason for the tears was the thought of telling all those little potters that their beautiful and unique creations were mined. Nothing could ever restore them to the way they were.
While I ached for Mrs. Baldwin, while I again saw how blessed our children are to have a teacher who cares so very much about them, I also ached for Jesus. Why would I ache for Jesus? He did not have His students’ projects melt in a kiln. Why would He be weeping? Why would He need comforting?
This event took me back to what happened in the Garden of Eden. God’s art project, man, was perfect! Man was just the way God had formed and fashioned him out of the dust of the earth, much like the clay the students had used for their pottery projects. He even made man in His perfect image. When God’s art project came in contact with the one who lives in a fiery environment, God’s art projects, Adam and Eve, melted under pressure from the fiery one and became, momentarily, more attached to the kiln of satan than to the God who created them. That attachment to satan, mined Adam and Eve and all of us forever in terms of perfection. While perfection will not be restored to us until heaven, God used His only Son to pry us loose from satan’s kiln. While satan still does all he can to make things in his kiln look appealing, it still always destroys. satan’s presence destroys our relationships. destroys love, destroys beauty and hope and joy and our faith in the Potter. satan always wants us to question God. God simply wants us to trust Him.
How wise we would be to pray the words of Isaiah 64:8, “But now, 0 Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.” What wisdom is found in the words of Romans 9:20, “But who are you, 0 man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, ‘Why have you made me like this?’ Has the Potter no right over the clay...”
The good news is that our Potter will always love us and He will always have the ability to restore us. This is one of the reasons we sing, “Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation and renew a right spirit within me.” God has rescued us from the eternal kiln of hell. While satan daily tries to entice us to the offerings of the supposed ftrn loving and free environment of his forever hot kiln, today, let Christ’s love break you free from satan’s temptations and find true freedom. Let Christ’s love melt your heart and let His forgiveness reshape you and remold you into the person He created you to be. Trust Jesus who destroyed Himself to save you. Pay no attention té satan who is already destroyed and wants to destroy you just for his own entertainment.
Take just a moment to relax, be still and again feel the Potter’s hand on your heart and your life. You will feel like a new creation after sharing some honest words of prayer with Him. Tell Him you appreciate the way He created you. Trustingly place yourself and your situations in His hands and you will be amazed at what beautiful things He will craft with and through you. Remember His promise to all of us in Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, He has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that He cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” Trust the Potter. Enjoy being His clay!
